CASE STUDY
Positioning Akeyless as a Leader in AI Agent Security
Akeyless partnered with MRA Research to develop a research programme designed to power an annual “State of” report and create high-value content across the year. Through credible research with IT security decision makers in the US and UK, the study uncovered the scale of emerging AI agent identity and credential risks, providing Akeyless with a strong evidence base for thought leadership, brand awareness, and demand generation.
Akeyless wanted to strengthen its position as a thought leader in a fast-moving and increasingly complex area of cybersecurity: AI agent identity and access management. The challenge was not simply to create another piece of marketing content, but to develop a credible, research-led programme that would deliver lasting value over time.
The objective was to produce an annual “State of” report backed by robust data, helping Akeyless speak authoritatively about the risks organizations are already facing as AI agents become more widely adopted. At the same time, the research needed to support practical commercial goals, including greater brand visibility, stronger engagement with target audiences, and more effective lead generation.
We designed and delivered a quantitative research programme focused on IT security decision makers in two key markets: the United States and the United Kingdom. In total, the study captured insights from 400 respondents, including 300 in the US and 100 in the UK.
The research was structured to explore how organisations are using AI agents, how identity and access controls are being managed in practice, and where the biggest security vulnerabilities are emerging. The findings were then shaped into a flagship annual “State of” report, with additional outputs planned to maximise value over the course of the year, including a whitepaper, executive summary, webinar, and vertical-specific reports.
This approach ensured the programme delivered more than a single research asset. It created a foundation for sustained content production and ongoing market conversation.
The research showed that AI agent adoption is already mainstream, with 94% of organisations using AI agents. However, governance is struggling to keep pace. 49% said developers regularly bypass IAM controls to keep AI agents operational, while 83% suggested this happens in practice.
The risks are already having real impact. 83% said a single compromised credential could affect multiple major systems, 77% agreed AI agent risk is already present now, and 61% had revoked or rotated credentials due to suspected exposure. On average, organizations reported spending just over $1 million in the last year responding to AI agent identity and credential issues, while 67% suspected AI agents had already accessed data they should not have.
The programme gave Akeyless a credible body of original research that could support a full year of content and campaign activity. It provided a clear, evidence-based narrative around the risks of AI agent identity and credential exposure, helping strengthen Akeyless’ positioning as a trusted voice in the market.
The result was a high-value research asset with practical commercial use: increasing visibility, supporting demand generation, and creating multiple opportunities for audience engagement across formats and channels.
